Secrets

Secret Locations

There are a number of secret locations in FFX that you can access by searching the world map with your airship, or by simply entering passwords.

Airship Coordinates
Use the following coordinates on the airship world map, then press X when you've found the spot. These coordinates are approximates, so move the cursor around a little and press X repeatedly to find the hidden areas.

  • Baaj Temple -- X:14 Y:60 (find Lulu's Onion Knight and Anima here)
  • Sanubia Desert: X:15 Y:41 (find Tidus's Ascalon)
  • Omega Ruins: X:74 Y:36 (battle Ultima Weapon, steal items, and find spheres)
  • Besaid Falls: X:31 Y:73 (find Kihmari's Dragoon Lance)
  • Mi-I'hen Ruins: X:34 Y:58 (find Rikku's Sonar here)
  • Battle Site: X:42 Y:57 (find Lulu's Phantom Bangle here)

Airship Passwords
You can also input passwords to uncover secret locations. These passwords are hidden throughout the game in Al Bhed -- but if you can't read it, here they are (note that they have to be entered in all caps):

  • GODHAND -- Let's you go to lower Mushroom Rock Road where you will find Rikku's legendary weapon.
  • VICTORIOUS -- Enter this to access a secret area in the ruins of Besaid. Climb the tree to get your hands on Rikku's powerful Victorious armor.
  • MURASAME -- Another secret area in the ruins of Besaid. You will find Auron's Murasame (ability: One MP Cost) here.

This is also where you will upgrade all of the weapons with crests/sigils.

Hidden Aeons

Don't stop with Bahamut. There are three more aeons that you can find in Final Fantasy X that are not required to finish the game -- but that make beating tough fiends a whole lot easier.

Yojimbo
Fans of the Kurosawa movie of the same name will get a kick out of the fact that there's an aeon named Yojimbo hidden in this game. But he comes at a price -- so save up at least 200,000 Gil before you go hunting for Yojimbo. To find Yojimbo, get your butt to the Calm Lands, go to the northeastern exit and pass underneath the bridge to go the area at the end of the gorge (this is where you fought Defender X -- in case you've forgotten). Here, you will find a save point and the entrance to the Cavern of the Stolen Fayth. Inside, walk deep into the cavern until you bump into the ghost of a dead summoner -- who will call upon the aeon known as Yojimbo. Defeat him using your aeons (in overdrive) and your most powerful magic attacks. Before you leave the cavern, use the warp pads to the left and right to get your hands on some helpful items, such as the Flexible Arm and X-Potions. When you're done, go to the Chamber of the Fayth.

Talk to Yojimbo and you will find out that this aeon doesn't work for free. Answer "To defeat the most powerful of enemies" to his question to get the lowest asking price, then offer Yojimbo half of what he's asking for plus 1 Gil. He will make a new offer and you should respond by raising your bid. Do this until he accepts your offer. Yojimbo's asking price and final price differ -- sometimes he'll turn down your offer, sometimes he'll entertain it. Don't worry if Yojimbo turns you down -- you can always repeat the procedure. You will probably end up paying as little as 200,000 or as much as 250,000. Note that you can get some valuable Teleport Spheres from Yojimbo if you offer him triple his asking price. Sure, it's expensive, but they allow you to warp to "greener pastures" on your sphere grid -- so it may be worth your money if you want to strengthen a character.

Anima
You've seen this chained bad boy before -- now it's time to claim the powerful aeon as your own. First, make sure that you have solved all the destruction sphere puzzles in each of the previous five Cloisters of Trials. If you're unsure whether you left some of them unsolved, go back and do them now. Note that the monks won't let you into the temples unless you have spoken to Maester Mika on High Road. If you've solved all the puzzles, enter the coordinates for Baaj temple (X:14 Y:60 -- move around a bit and press X to find the location) in the airship and make your way to the underwater temple entrance. Geosgaeno awaits. This is a tough fight, so be sure to equip anti-stone/death armor if you have it -- or stock up on Soft items if you don't. Use elemental magic and overdrives to win the battle (Geosgaeno is immune to almost everything else), then enter the temple. You will find six statues that correspond to the six Cloisters of Trials in Spira. Five of them will now activate, but you still need the last one. To get it, go to Zanarkand Dome and look for the white floor panels. Step on all seven of them (there are three in the first room and four in the large hall) to open up a Destruction Sphere in the first room. Grab it and put it into the hole in the large room right next to the monitor to make it blow up. You will get the Magistral Rod as a reward. It's time to go back to Baaj Temple.

All six statues are now active and you can enter the Chamber of the Fayth to claim the incredibly powerful Anima.

Magus Sisters
The final hidden aeon is actually a returning favorite from Final Fantasy IV.

First, get your hands on the above to aeons, then complete the Monster Arena side quest in the Calm Lands and capture all the fiends from Mt. Gagazet. You will receive the Blossom crown as a reward. Next, go to Remiem Temple, which is hidden in the mountains east of the Calm Lands. Here, you can challenge Belgemine and fight against any aeon that you have unlocked so far. Beat her Bahamut and you will get the Flower Scepter. You still have to defeat Yojimbo and Anima. Once you have beaten all the aeons, use your Blossom Crown and Flower Scepter to open the locked door ahead and get the final aeon in FFX.

Don't forget to fight Belgemine's Magus Sisters again for an additional reward.

Al Bhed Language

Wondering what the Al Bhed are saying? Well, here's a key to their language. But there's of course an easier way to understand Al Bhed -- and that's learning the language by collection Al Bhed primers that are hidden throughout the game.

Overdrives

Tidus
Tidus learns new Overdrive techniques simply by using his old ones. You have to successfully pull off an Overdrive for it to count.

  • Spiral Cut (available from start)
  • Slice & Dice (perform 10 Overdrives)
  • Energy Rain (perform 30 Overdrives)
  • Blitz Ace (perform 80 Overdrives)

Yuna
Yuna's Overdrive lets her summon an aeon with its Overdrive gauge completely filled. She is not able to learn specific techniques like the other characters.

Auron
Collect the Jecht, Auron, and Braska spheres that are hidden throughout Spira to teach Auron new techniques.

  • Dragon Fang (available from start)
  • Shooting Star (find one sphere)
  • Banishing Blade (find three spheres)
  • Tornado (find all 10 spheres)

Locations:

  • Jecht Sphere: Macalania Forest (after Spherimorph fight)
  • Jecht Sphere: Besaid Village (next to temple)
  • Jecht Sphere: S.S. Liki (on the bridge in Besaid)
  • Jecht Sphere: Luca Stadium (basement level A)
  • Jecht Sphere: Mi-ihen Highroad (southern Old Road)
  • Auron's Sphere: Mushroom Rock Road (cliff)
  • Jecht Sphere: Moonflow (South Wharf)
  • Jecht Sphere: Thunder Plains (southern part)
  • Jecht Sphere: Macalania Woods (southern area)
  • Braska's Sphere: Mt. Gagazet (Mountain Trail)

Kihmari
Kihmari can learn new techniques from his enemies by using the Lancet ability. Try this move on every fiend you meet (or switch Kihmari in whenever one of the following attacks is used on you) to build up his repertoire of Overdrives. Be sure to learn his most powerful move, Nova, from the Omega Weapon.

  • Jump
  • Fire Breath
  • Seed Cannon
  • Self-Destruct
  • Thrust Kick
  • Stone Breath
  • Aqua Breath
  • Doom
  • White Wind
  • Bad Breath
  • Mighty Guard
  • Nova

Wakka
Wakka is a Blitzball player, so it's only fitting that his new techniques are unlocked by playing Blitzball. By winning in the League and Tournaments you can expand your repertoire to the following overdrives:

  • Element Reels (available from start)
  • Attack Reels
  • Status Reels
  • Aurochs Spirit

Lulu
Lulu's Fury Overdrive allows her to cast any black magic spell multiple times in a row without losing MP. Rotate the right analog stick clockwise as fast as you can to increase the number of attacks.

Rikku
Rikku's Overdrive ability allows her to mix two items together for devastating attacks or helpful potions.

Jecht Shot
To teach Tidus his father's signature Blitzball move, look for a ball on the deck of the S.S. Winno. Press the circle button and you will be challenged to a quick button-pressing exercise. If you didn't get it on your first trip to Luca, don't worry. You can always go back once you get the airship and repeat the challenge. You can win more powerful Jecht Shot moves by winning Blitzball tournaments.

Overdrive: Energy Blast for Valefor
Valefor also has a second Overdirve that you can acquire once Yuna join the party. Return to Besaid and speak to the little girl with a dog standing next to the temple, and you'll receive an item that gives Valefor the Overdrive Energy Blast. If the little girl isn't near the temple, then look for her inside the item shop. Energy Blast inflicts greater damage at the cost of a higher recovery time.

Defeating Evrae Atlana easily
When you fight Evrae Atlana underwater in Bevelle, simply use some Phoenix Downs on her and she should die quickly. If you don't have any Phoenix Downs, X-Potions and Elixers work wonders against her as well.

Faster party

Have your three fastest characters in your battle party formation to always get your initial turns faster. Then, just switch them out for slower characters, allowing them to go instead.

Easier Chocobo handling

Hold L1 + L2 + R1 + R2 and your Chocobo will be easier to steer.

Keep items in Monster Arena

When fighting in the Monster Arena, even if you die, you still keep any items you may have stolen.

Items from dodging lightning

In the Thunder Plains, if you can dodge the lightning a certain number of times in a row, you will be rewarded with items. Additionally, if you get struck by lightning 30 times, you get an Ether. If you get hit 80 times, you get an Elixir.

Sanubia Desert (west): Search the sign near the Cactuar rock that reads "20% Off".
Sanubia Desert (central): Near the ruins to the west; Look for the two Cactuars that are running in the desert.
Sanubia Desert (east): Near the save point under the tent.

Sanubia Desert: Return to the Cactuar statue and the last one automatically appears behind you.

This is my anima doing a normal attack!(needs to be updated because i hav doubled its hp lol! =)

Infinite overdrives:

first you have to have quite high strength lvls about 120 upwards then have wakka, tidus or some one with an overdrive which attacks multiple enimies then have them put on slayer to build their overdrives up and just use the multiple attack e.g attack reels or energy rain and watch as you have instant wins every time you fight a normal battle!

Lotsa gil:

go to the omega dungeon have some one in your party with gillionaire rikku will be the most likly person to have a weapon with it or you can customise one for some one else, take two other characters with high strength lvls or characters that can hit quite high about 60,000 damage at most, then run around near the save sphere that you teleport in on and wait until you get in to a fight with a zaurus and a tresure chest, these are quite common don't worry, steal or mug from the chest if it has nothing to steal then it will change into a mimic kill it they have from 40,000 to 60,000 health when the battle finishes you will recieve 100,000 gil!
